Spray Tanning Guide

What is spray tanning? How does it work?

Dihydroxyacetone, also known as DHA, is a colourless sugar and the active ingredient in the tanning solution sprayed onto your skin.

Applied using a specialist low-pressure spray tanning machine, the DHA interacts with proteins and amino acids in the outer layer of your skin to produce a golden-brown colour.

The colour you see at the time of your treatment is a guide colour, which helps your therapist see that your skin has been evenly covered. Your actual tan develops over time and is revealed after you shower.

Is it safe?

Spray tanning is generally considered a safe way to achieve a sun-kissed look without UV exposure. A Sienna X sunless tan can give similar-looking results to spending time in the sun, but without the harmful effects of UV rays.

DHA has been widely used in the personal care industry for many years. Minor skin irritation can occasionally happen, and allergic reactions are rare.

If you have experienced allergic reactions to self-tanning or other beauty products, please arrange a skin patch test with your therapist before treatment.

Before, during and after your treatment

  • On your first tanning treatment, your therapist will ask you some consultation questions and complete a consultation card.
  • You will undress to your chosen dark underwear and remove jewellery before your spray tan.
  • Barrier cream will be applied to your hands, elbows, knees, feet and other dry areas to help reduce tan absorption.
  • Simply follow your therapist's instructions. The spray application usually takes around 10 minutes.
  • The guide colour will be showered off after your development time, which can be up to 10 hours, to reveal your natural-looking Sienna X tan.
